'Science and nature', we've most definitely heard that combination before but who is balancing the two well enough to assist towards healthy skin. ar457 follow the notion and 'fuse an ancient beauty secret and cutting edge cosmetics using the latest discoveries to enhance and refine a natural miracle' and I think they have nailed it quite frankly.

I was introduced to the brand last year and wrote a post about the Metaserum Elixir, a truly overwhelming serum with the powers of Argan oil and new technology. I was converted then a there, I wanted to test more.

ar457 have been generous in allowing me to discover the entire range, which I can wholeheartedly say has been a unique experience as formulations consist of textures from rich, balmy creams to grainy emulsions and yes, predictably oils. I'm not going to tell you about all the products but the ones I am most impressed with.

I began with the Skin Cleanser, a good place to start. I know there are popular oil cleansers, some award winning but my skin has never like these much, however, the almost dry oil formulation removed every trace of daily grime remarkably well, though not to be used to remove eye make up. Skin Cleanser left my skin ultra soft with no sign of breakouts (something that has happened in the past). Using this day and night has kept my skin feeling subtle and never dry or stripped of its natural oils.

I found the boost from using the Regenerating Care after cleansing the ultimate in hydration!

I do love an eye cream, I don't expect it to banish lines but one that keeps my eyes puff-free in the mornings. I was sceptical with Long Lasting Eye Contour because it pumps out a light emulsion not a gel, which can be more soothing but I needn't have feared a thing, it left my eye area dewy, hydrated with no signs of additional water retention.

Finally, for the body, a spray oil, Silky Oil, a welcome surprise and what a scent. I can't quite put my finger on the aroma but I adore using this after a shower to lock in moisture. One would think it might feel oily, sticky or slippery on the skin, no, it absorbs well with no signs of staining clothes for those of you who might be unconvinced. This is a firm favourite!

There is plenty more to say about the range but I would love to hear from those of you who have tried ar457 or keen to experience this exceptional fusion of science and nature.

If you consider Givenchy more a fragrance brand than a make up one then please think again! I've been using Givenchy for almost a decade and time after time my heart melts for the Prisme's, quadruplets of colour in the shape of blushers, pressed powders,

powder foundations and eye shadow quads and mono's.

The mono's are available in the perfect 'smoky' alternatives, greys, plums as well as these, shown above, Casual Khaki on the left, Dressy Indigo, the right, are clever quads of the same shade, which some might think a bit of a waste but look again, they are all kinds of textures. I say, this is genius on many levels especially as we tend to fall in love with a shade that suits us over and over again, therefore this is a super solution where one can really experiment and nail that up to date smoky eye. For a matte effect, choose Mat on the bottom left and top left for a Light Pearly finish, not too shimmery but enough to create a soft focus effect. Top right is an Intense Pearly finish which reveals a great smoky shade on its own and lastly, bottom right has all the shimmer, sparkle complete in Sequined, multi-faceted colour.

Operation Thick, Voluminous Hair!

Countless clients ask about haircare products to give their hair a helping hand to appear thicker, it is an all too common problem these days but there are solutions. I have written much about hair loss but which products really do have the glam-factor when it comes to styling?

The Dual Bio Effect!

Day 2, left side of my face - my skin is lightly peppered with blemishes (note the one on my upper cheek) which I could not banish whilst on holiday in the sun. My pores are looking too open for my liking and skin generally tired.

Day 2, right side of my face - similar texture here with open pores and a few unsightly marks (note the one close to my ear) from stress and hormonal spots I'd gained late last year. I am wearing a dab of cream blush in both pictures; its not rosacea but Une Breezy Cheeks!

1 week, left side of my face - pores appear refined and blemishes less prominent, especially that annoying one on my upper cheek.

1 week, right side of my face - a noticable reduction of pore size with skin appearing more taught along with fading blemishes I'd longed to get rid of. There is a touch of natural radiance too, which is very much welcome!

Two weeks, left side of my face - I hope you are as impressed as I am. Need I say more! Not only have I had countless friends, clients and colleagues ask me what I've been using but the odd beauty expert too.

2 weeks, right side of my face - my skin, without doubt is oozing luminosity and is almost blemish-free.

Sweet Honey Lips!

I love tinted lip colours, not only because they are a quick sweep of colour in a sheer finish or that they feel light, non sticky and unfussy but they leave lips looking natural and can accompany neutral to smoky eye make up so well.
Clinique have just launched Almost Lipstick, an array of slim and sweetly packaged shades. I have 4 to show you:

I was a little stuck as to show you these colour in true form, so opted for a fingertip swatch. These shades of honey create a syrupy shine from nude to deep aubergine. From top to bottom: Tender Honey, Flirty Honey, Lovely Honey and Chic Honey.

Then finally a paper swatch from left to right: Chic Honey, Lovely Honey, Flirty Honey and Tender Honey.

These are a welcome addition to any make up kit or handbag if you like shine and the 'Almost' coloured lip look.

Liner Lover!

If you're a black eyeliner addict, then look no further. Alcina Balance Eye achieves superb precision at an odd price (why did they not round it off?) but only £12.10.

Liquid liner can be fiddly to apply, too wet with more chance of smudging or down right tricky to get a slick line with a sexy flick, though Alcina's Eye Styler liner pen is a lasting brilliant black which draws a fine line perfectly due to the firm tip, no sign of running out part way through application as I discovered with countless applications. No smudging at all so guaranteed not to slide down after a long day or night. Liner lovers, go get it!!

Lines, wrinkles and creases!

There isn't a day that goes by without someone stating 'they are beyond repair' or 'in desperate need of cosmetic surgery'. We all have moments of insecurity, some more than others, though the majority of women I come across put themselves and their looks down along with declaring themselves old and adamant they want to turn the clock back as fast as they can by any means.
Well, hold on a minute! I've been thinking quite hard about my process of ageing and yes, I believe I have aged somewhat, more so in the past two years but as I take a closer look and study my eyes, the new creases and open pores, I have no feelings of dismay, not one. Why?
It's the process taking place and I really cannot do an awful lot about it without surgery, plus I feel quite proud of getting older and certainly prouder of getting a little wiser. Yes, I admit, I could recommend myself a stockpile of award winning anti-ageing beauty creams, serums and potions as I do others, after all they are not a complete waste of time and money, 'every little helps' as they say and a product that blurs, smooths and fills in is welcome in my beauty bag but I don't think lines, wrinkles and creases are to blame for appearing older nescessarily.
What am I banging on about?
When I accessed my ageing process, especially after my recent holiday, it boiled down to one factor, sleep!
I slept for 9 hours every night whilst I was away, undisturbed, unbroken sleep, pure and utter bliss and a darn shock to me after being an insomniac since my teens and serial bad light sleeper. After 2 weeks of 9 hours sleep my eyes refocused to appearing brighter with less fluid retained under my eyes whilst the new and even newer creases seemed less noticeable as I looked fresher...younger even!
I know some of you may be reading this thinking, 'yeah, yeah, whatever', 'where's the product mention and has she lost her marbles?'
Quite simply, we all pat ourselves on the back at times for achieving a great deal in a short amount of time, for working till late, having no time to wind down and then moan about what little sleep we've had. Of course, I am one of those types too and yes, it can't always be avoided but seriously, as well as that very boring beauty tip of drinking 1.5 litres of water a day (which works), allow yourself a good nights sleep, it will do you the world of good in terms of concentration, energy and your ageing process, plus this is the crucial time for skin to repair and replenish itself.
For those women with deep enough wrinkles to bury hidden treasure in, sometimes life is cruel but we can be pretty cruel to ourselves too and maybe genes haven't been so gracious to you but I am sticking to this, sleep has the X factor and I shall remain optimistic that I shall never endure another 20 years + of insomnia again.

Beauty Alert: Dior Skinflash Primer!

This year will be the year of more outstanding, 'I must have it' beauty products, I can feel the beauty editors trembling with anticipation for the next big thing, though let us not forget some of our essentials keep improving with technology, ingredients etc. and this includes a make up bag mummy, the primer.
Primers tend to be unsung heroes in the grand scheme of make-upping, yet at the same time hailed as an essential item by pros - the good and reliable step hence 'mummy', but also classed as unnecessary by some, others will declare Laura Mercier's the best of all but I have a few favourites in my kit, which I choose to use depending on the foundation I have chosen to apply. These brands range from Sisley, DHC, Illamasqua and Hourglass, all possessing necessary functions to this key step. I love primers and all is revealed in the name, they prime and prepare skin, some can smooth and fill in pores with silicon ingredients, whilst others add a luminous or even waterproof quality to skin, as well as working hard to adhere to foundation, making for a longer lasting base.
Seeing as I like to mix my kit with budget and premium brands, I would stress that primers are a good investment, much like foundation, therefore a little more money spent on these will go a long way.

Some of us lucky MUA's have been sent a trio of gorgeousness from Dior. I very much doubt any of them stored these beauties away for future use but instead, like me, pretty much couldn't wait to open the outer packaging, remove the soft cushion case to reveal some truly magical products!

So roll on February so you can purchase Dior's new launches, Rosy Glow Blush, Radiance Booster Pen and SKINFLASH Primer which happens to be my new work kit essential, 'glowful' on pale to mid complexions with brush on applicator (looks familiar) and I do not recall Dior ever bringing out a Primer, I could be wrong, I am certainly not complaining, this is a welcome addition to my kit and everyone I apply it to is overwhelmed by the appearance of their skin and they adore the light fragrance too! I cannot stop using this primer on shoots and the next two images show you why.

The gel cream formulation applied to the back of my hand shows off how hydrating and comfortable the Skinflash is.

And when smoothed, adds a sheen and delicate veil. Yes, I am well aware this might not be the right type of primer for dark skins but I think applying to my skin really displays the texture and quality. What do you think and which primers do you like?

Tres bien, Chanel Perfection Lumiere!

Chanel have an outstanding reputation for the quality of their foundations, which I doubt many MUA's would turn their noses up at. I have relished in using Vita Lumiere Aqua for a light, dewy finish for portrait shoots, brides etc. or when someone has requested 'the lightest foundation you have, as I don't like the feel of foundation on my skin'. This has served me well but not every skin is going to benefit from such 'real' qualities especially when they haven't the most even skin tone.
I too prefer using weightless foundations, however, when coverage is high on my list of priorities when faced with a complexion of blemishes, broken veins, pigmentation marks and sun spots that has to last for several hours, I find I have to tend to those imperfections either before or after with maximum strength concealers. This is no bother to me but if one needs time on their side Chanel have come up trumps with their new addition, Perfection Lumiere.
Many of you would have read lots of review about this flawless beauty solution, which is remarkably (and most genuinely) the best coverage without the heavy duty feel....one could apply this, then run their finger over it and find not even ounce of residue or feeling of anything but skin. Perfection Lumiere reminds me of Givenchy Mat Mate (which I have sadly just had to bin as they've separated, boo hoo!) another unique and superb foundation from another of my French pals discontinued, never to be seen again which had a matt finish and extreme coverage even when using just a few drops. So it is lovely to find a very new alternative from Chanel in such an astonishing array of shades, see image above if you don't believe me!
I'm beyond relieved and excited to have such an addition to my kit and in good dark shades too, which is always a moment of awkwardness when recommending shades to each and every individual out there who deserves to be catered for.
The cost is not an issue, I think £36 is worth every pretty penny as such a small amount goes far, plus it builds effortlessly if you do require maximum coverage without the weightiness.
Bravo Chanel and thank you for yet again coming up triumphantly in the world of foundations!!

Rare Beauty Treat: Ar457 Elixir Metaserum

I love a rare find and this has to fit into a category as one of those beauty products you wish you'd had when you first begun using skincare as I am convinced I would be able to stand the test of time. I tend to by pass packaging but no doubt, this is beautifully designed, light to carry and unfussy. Ar457 Elixir Metaserum is a highly concentrated, powerful serum heaving with active ingredients such as Argan Oil, very much the buzzword in beauty over the past few years and a long time loved oil in many parts of Africa and the Middle East, lucky them.

I have had this in my bathroom since the beginning of the summer and since I've been overwhelmed testing so much skincare I really had little time to put this through its paces, until now. Branded as the 'do-it-all' elixir as it also tends to blemishes, dry nails and hair it does seem too that a little goes a long way.

You'd expect this to feel oily and as heavy as Argan Oil but no, it has the quality of something a little like honey in appearance, without the stickiness and once a few drops are smoothed over skin, it gleams and sits a little, which I just love in this wintry weather, as my skin feels protected. As you can see from the image above it adds a glow and can be worn alone, at night too, though I have experimented a little by mixing a few drops with daily moisturisers, a light-weight formula, Skin Science Bio Active 24hr Protective Complex Cream

and Dior's Hydra Life Pro-Youth Protective Cream SPF 15, a rich cream where both appear to benefit by an all day radiance and hydration.

A rare find that is Ar457Elixir Metaserum does carry a hefty price tag, approx £78, though saying this I believe it is a good, economical investment seeing as you need only a few drops for every use. I'm in!

Jean Paul Gaultier, the feathery fragrance!

I had the pleasure of being a guest at the instore launch of Jean Paul Gaultier's new fragrance, Kokorico which was wafting in the air all evening. I adore JPG fragrances as they have depth, many layers and the packaging is always intriguing and tactile. On entering the soiree, I wondered then why Fragile, one of my all time favourite scents had disappeared from our shelves. Please bring it back!!

Kokorico is nothing but a musky scent for men that I found so appealing, I already have it listed as a product to purchase for myself (or birthday present, hint, hint). I love heavy notes so I think a little squirt wouldn't be too offensive or make me smell like a macho lothario (or at least one hopes not).

Ah, the name, well, its cute and if you look carefully at the design you see stylised feathers...the tv campaign gives you more of an idea once you see dancing, drums and a rather attractive model with a feather collared suit. Cocker-doodle-do! Yep, that's it!

The smooth, almost pebble like bottle takes on a male profile - that sure is one romanesque nose.

And at another angle, the male torso, clever huh! Very JPG.

So if you are keen to snatch this rich scent it will be launching on the 27th December in Harrods, then nationwide shortly after.

Backstage of You Magazine Shoot with the Inbetweeners girls!

About a month or so ago, one weekend, I was heading to a North London location for a You Magazine shoot with the fabulous girls from The Inbetweeners movie. It was a pleasure working with the team, including photographer, Steve Schofield, who's work I've admired for some time and I was overjoyed to see him again after a recent shoot for Soap & Glory.

Here are some of the stunning girls behind the scenes in between shots.

And a closer look at the captivating, Laura Haddock, the cover girl for this issue of You.

Laura has a delightful face to work on and what a shock to see dark locks instead of blonde. Nevertheless, I added moisture to her hair with Sebastian Potion 9 and used large Babyliss barrel tongs to get a 50's style set with a modern twist. And Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Fascinante lips to finish such a chic youthful look.

Then, the intriguing beauty of Lydia Rose Bewley, who's titan hair was boosted with movement, again with large barrel tongs and spritz of Sebastian Trilliant, then seeing I wanted it all about the lips, Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet L'Exuberante, added a sexy pink finish!

Organic Surge Shower Gel.

I am not going to go into the 'ethical' nature of the brand, as it's quite simply a 'no-brainer'. What I will say is I didn't expect to write up about this product, it is a shower gel after all and what can be said about that other than it cleans me and smells nice.

It is clearly stated on the front of Organic Surge Sugared Almond Shower Gel, "Your Skin's Best Friend" and I would admit to this, it is like a best friend. It's reliable and enhances my mornings, although it doesn't laugh at my jokes, I still love it so and would stock up on this product again.

The essential oils, namely palmarosa and almond are not sickly sweet but aromatic, in a grown up way. I expected this shower gel to be grainy because of the words 'sugared almond' plus with the labelling 'softening' I really did expect quite a 'bitty' exfoliating texture but no, it's smooth and leaves my skin feeling soft, refreshed and revitalised.

Organic Surge shower gel is a lovely addition to my winter routine, it is all about hydration and lifting my spirits on these dull mornings with the added bonus of being 100% natural, it's only £3.99.

I love my freelance life, being part of a team on set, plus seeing my portfolio grow with work I am proud of, though recently I have noticed my 'Celebrity' and 'Advertising' pages in my portfolio stacking up with new images but not my 'Beauty' page. It has been some time since I have produced a beauty shoot for my book as work flows in and updates itself, I crave to occasionally go back to basics to rediscover why I took a leap into this profession in the first place almost 20 years ago. Don't get me wrong I enjoy creating characters for TV commercials such as The Sun Bingo Bubbles and being closely involved in the process; attending meetings, making prototypes, researching etc, etc. But I have felt the need to push myself further and going back to techniques, styles and a way of working I was once used to, with an immense passion for art.
A few months ago, I emailed the sensational, advertising photographer, Karan Kapoor, who I've worked with for many years, to ask if he was interested in doing a beauty shoot, captivating colour with a loose, painterly feel. I sent references and my inspiration and prayed to get a positive response considering he is very much sought after in the advertising world. He immediately said yes, phew!
The hardest task was to find the models, so Karan took this up and contacted the model agencies. Every so often I'd be cc'd into an email or sent a large file of model cards from various top agencies to select two models, which doesn't sound too taxing but I had a specific brief and vision for this shoot, so we were prepared to wait some time to get the right girls, one dark, one blonde with delicate features.
About 3, maybe 4 months later, the date was set, studio booked, models chosen and I had gathered drawings and notes to redefine 4 definite looks.

Before the shoot day, I took the time to play around with colours on myself and to think outside the box with free reign. Admittedly, I never worked well in the fashion world, all a bit too much for a sensitive type like me but I still have artistic flair and style.

I played around with textures as well as complimentary colours to see whether I could capture what I had imagined in my head and in my notes. Would it all be down to post production or my ability of trickery? Seeing as I started out in the 90's I hold the skills and conduct myself for make up that should be perfected before being put in front of the camera, as we used polaroid to check the lighting, then shot with film. Today with digital, there are opportunities to play around a great deal in post and I am not opposed to this, it has its place but I never want my eye for detail to get lazy.

On the day of the shoot, the photographer, Karan, assistant, Dan, models, Egle (all pictured above), Rosie and not forgetting the my wonderful shining star, Tasha, all descended on a West London studio to create beautiful skin, splashes of colour with loose, free application. My first look was on Egle, using neon colours from Belle Pierre, Sleek, Make Up For Ever and Illamasqua all applied with a light touch and close attention to flawless skin.

Tasha, kindly prepped Egle's and Rosie's skin with QMS Medicosmetics Deep Cleanser and Freshening Tonic, then smoothed Sisley Instant Perfection to prime the skin before I brushed on Givenchy foundation and indulged in captivating colour.

Throughout the day, I covered more looks than I had hoped to, which was very exciting and I gave myself the chance to use my reliable and effective cosmetics such as Front Cover Cosmetics and Blink & Go to push the boundaries and to discover more from them, but there is no point in me droning on about the background goings on, here are some of the final looks.

Sexy, understated beauty.

I know you all love a 'before and after', it's a great way to see the impact of a product, colour, effect. I worked with hair maestro, Maximiliano Centini and photographer, Vic Singh on a recent shoot for the salon. Flora is the house model and kindly allowed me to show one of my transformations one her again.

Firstly, no base, just Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer on Flora's face. Then a wash of Dior coppery bronze from the Golds 5 Colour palette over the entire eye area, up into the brow bone and lower lashes.

I chose to use the deepest khaki shade from my Givenchy, Khaki Egerie Prisme into across the sockets. These are lovely colours against grey, blue or green eyes and very much on trend!

I blended more of the khaki shades around the eyes, then added beige and shimmery yellow highlights to the centre of the lower lash line, plus a dab a shimmering pale gold by RMK Ingenious Powder Eye colour on the inner eye for a sexy highlight. One coat of Diego Dalla Palma Semi Permanent Mascara gave lashes some separation and lengthening effect. I decided not to use individual or strip lashes to enhance Flora's features in a more natural way.

Now that the Givenchy Mattmate foundation was buffed on and sadly discontinued, (sorry), I also achieved brightening on the upper part of the cheek bones and around the eye area with Une Skin Glow Pencil. Finally, you can see why I rave about this gem all the time.

Absolutely no powder was necessary on Flora's skin but to aid sculpting I applied Pixi Lumi Lux Bronzer, which gave a subtle sheen so skin appeared radiant, rather than flat and lifeless.

So as not to overplay the lips I kept it simple by dabbing a mix of MAC Gloss with a tad of Front Cover bronze loose eye colour from the Moon Dust collection. This gave a subtle colour in similar tones to the eyes keeping the look groomed and understated.

Some of the TV ads I work on tend to get a fair run but others are quick, snappy offers such as the recent Fabulous Bingo ad with characters Kate and Candi in a 'greasy spoon'. As with all their adverts, Fabulous Bingo like to show a big reveal of Kate, the plain Jane type and the surroundings.

Kate, looking dreary, unkempt, though yes, the actress is naturally pretty.

Then the reveal to a polished, fashion concious Kate after signing into Fabulous Bingo online. Notice the background change too!

Then the slightly stroppy Candi, rather 'Essex' style in lots of bronzer, lashes and lip gloss.

My, my, my face!

I've admitted it before and will do again, I tend not to wear much make up, though I am passionate about cosmetics, I do consider myself an artist, therefore, I tend not to experiment much on myself.

However, when I was offered to try my face cosmetics and saw how they categorise their range into colours and shades to suit 'your face'. It is a very simple way for consumer to decide on the correct shades specifically for them and on my quest to prove there are products out there for everyone, the challenge was set, could I find some basic products for me!?

I'm always riddled with dark circles under my eyes, especially at the moment with stress and lack of sleep!

The my face product I selected was Medium>Dark concealer, 311. A decent yellow toned concealer in a super light formula, which concerned me, would it cover and stay put?

I dotted the concealer in the darkest areas. The colour match at this point was good, I was relieved the liquid didn't alter in colour as soon as it touched my skin, which for those of you with darker complexions would understand. I then blended the colour with my ring finger, smoothed into all the knooks and crannies around my eyes.

Impressed? I am. The concealer has brilliantly blurred my uneven shadows and brightened around my eyes. Challenge one was complete so what next!

This warm 'neutral' palette of eye colours called Morocco appealed to me as I am somewhat keen on 'nudes', which can be the trickiest of looks to get right. Why? Because some of us have pink, yellow or blue undertones and to perfect 'nude' one needs to compliment that. The top shade is a cool beige, the second a coppery bling tone, then finally a deep dark bronze colour.

I applied the darkest shade over my eye lids with the minute applicator. I would recommend using a larger brush, but a few sweeps and it was on very smoothly indeed!

This is quite a lot of make up for me at this point but what the hell, I wanted to try all the shades in the Morocco palette. I dabbed the bling tone onto to the centre of my eye lid, then the cool beige was carefully applied to the inner eye as an additional highlight.

I like to apply lip colour before cheeks sometimes, this helps one judge how much blush they really need, plus we tend to decide on a lip colour before blush anyway. I had decided to use Medium>Dark, Rose Lip Pencil, a soft pink along with Medium>Dark Ooh Baby Baby, a fantastic nude with just enough beige and just enough pink.

I decided to keep this entire look in brown tones, so this blusher in Sul'tan' of Swing was perfect to contour and add a warmth to my cheeks. As much as my skin tone is medium/dark asian skin with a yellow base, I abhor that 'no blush' look on asian ladies or any lady for that matter. Why oh why leave blusher out of your routine? The tones in our skin can make us appear flat and as much as we are darker than some, that additional pop of colour or depth is essential to reveal a complete look.

And here is the finished look, well within my comfort zone and most importantly, the my face range for Medium>Dark skin were the perfect match.

You must of heard of Diego Dalla Palma by now, if not, then just pop over to Tesco Direct!
Yes, amongst the veg and ready meals comes a remarkably sophisticated cosmetics range from Milan, Italy. I have been waiting patiently for Diego Dalla Palma to hit the shelves though I didn't expect it to arrive somewhere as accessible as Tesco.

The brand is, *ahem*, nearly as old as me, born in the mid-70's by, yes, the genius creator, Diego Dalla Palma himself, a superstar make up artist of TV and Theatre, with a flair and dedication to colour, texture and light, hence why the line is causing a stir amongst industry pro's here in the UK, while the Italian's roll their eyes at us as DDP, the brand has been their make up artists' haven for an impressive number of years.

How does one put it into words about how sensational this brand really is?
There is nothing comparable to DDP, no, there isn't!
Er, why the need to compare one brand with another?
Ok, maybe if I told you this iconic make up brand is the 'MAC' of Italy. This may seem an outlandish thing to say but for those of you new to world of make up, MAC is not the only revolutionary and diverse brand. Shock horror! I may go to Beauty Hell along with all the discontinued products you or I have ever loved!
If there was ever a time to think outside the box and to try something new, then this is it!
I sense DDP was one of the first brands to push the boundaries of cosmetics and art, conjuring mixed media to make bold statements like 'make up is art'; you just have to feel the texture of the Wet Powder (out next Spring) and you might just understand. Seeing as I do come from an art background the products inspire me.

I am slowly working my way through some of the DDP products, namely, Whitening Anti Age Foundation SPF 30, which on first use exceeded my pretty high expectations. Firstly, I believe although labelled 'anti-age' it leaves a favourable finish to anyone, if anything, knowing the weightless liquid is boosted with SPF 30 makes for a very sensible purchase. When I initially pumped the foundation onto my hand I thought it would suit drier skin types better but after trialling on youthful, oilier skins I would in fact recommend it to all skin types, in winter months especially.

I am yet to experiment further and indeed I will. I already have the best-seller, Semi Permanent Mascara which I am eager to try on photoshoots this week.

My final thought and unfortunately its a bit of a negative one; the complete range doesn't quite seem to have settled into its new home on Tesco Direct, which I might add is a bit higgledy piggledy. It would be a sensible start for this high quality brand to be presented accordingly, with click-throughs that work to give it a good shot so as not to be pulled from the shelves due to poor sales. Pull out all the stops and get the e-commerce tip top then you might find a remarkably smart beauty junkie ready to add DDP to their basket.

My latest obsession, Front Cover!

I have become a little obsessed and curious about how some of the other collections might look on me. Although I have tried these on shoots, I haven't applied them to darker skin yet so I was keen to see the effects and styles I could come up with as a low maintenance make up wearer.

These are what I tested, Front Cover Top Drawer collection a colourful array of chunky pencils you might initially think 'what a mixed bag!'

I think, these are speedy essentials and a great way to add depth and dimension without the fuss of pots of loose glitter or pigments.

It was a relief to see all the shades show up, here's a run down on names and a brief description. From Top to Bottom: Purple Durple - solid deep purple, Lemon - sour lemon glitter, Pine Needle - bold jade green, Chalk - ice blue shimmer , Moccasin - taupe gold and Drifter - bright metallic blue.

Complete with a Black Kohl Eye Pencil with Smudger on one end and ...

...a Double Penicl Sharpener, yes, they've thought of everything at FC HQ!

Firstly, I thought I'd select the brightest pencil, Pine Needle, which leaves a solid line and shows up on my skin. It does remind me of what I've seen on X Factor's, Little Mix recently.

I then extended the line to a flick making for more impact and to elongate my eye shape.

I finished off by adding the shimmery pencil, Chalk onto the centre of the eye line and swept towards the inner eye. I love it. A confident flash of colour with a dewy highlight, quick and easy to achieve. There are so many options of where to go with this, I could have added the glittery Lemon pencil over the green line or even used Purple Durple as the starting point.

If I had fancied going all out I could have drawn a glittery line with the Chalk or Lemon pencils for a sparkly eyeline, the possibilities are endless.

That was one look in the bag, now a sultry effect...

I started with Moccasin as a base. It glided on well and added a flattering sheen to my eye lids, something I would like to wear for everyday.

I incorporated Lemon to the centre of the eyelids, a glimmering effect that adds nicely for this sultry look.

To finish I smudged the Black Kohl Pencil along the lower lash line and for added smokiness, placed it along the waterline. Smouldering eyes!

There are more directions, hints and tips on the inside of the box with images too so you can perfect plenty more playful looks with precision. This is an economical beauty must-have, now I cannot wait to try more of the Front Cover sets, I am officially obsessed!

Blue is the colour!

Time and time again I am asked, 'What colour eye shadow would suit me?', 'Who does the best eye-shadows?' and 'Eye-shadows never show up on my skin or last, what would you suggest?'
The time has come to put one brand, yes, a brand I love to the test and also face my personal fear of bold eye colours on my dark complexion! *gulp*

In addition to those questions comes the issue of budget. 'But I can't afford those premium brands all you Make Up Artists' recommend in the beauty pages!'
I hear you and I am no beauty nazi! I would rarely say there is no inexpensive solution because quite frankly, I know Front Cover Cosmetics. They wouldn't let me down, would they?

For a start, Front Cover kits are selling out fast which tells you something. They are complete colour trends cleverly put together with clear instructions and suggestions, plus what is not to love about a kit that hones in one key make up trend directly from the catwalk.

As you can see, Blue Eyed Girl is awash with blue hues, 3 (extremely velvety) eye-shadows with double ended applicator, a double ended mascara, Shadowline (one of my favourites) and finally a nail polish, in a beautiful midnight blue I might add.

One end a black mascara, a good staple product and a bright blue mascara. I know what you're thinking, very 80's and can she pull it off? Will that show up on me? Not sure but I'm willing to give it a go!

I love Front Cover Baked Eye-Shadows, they last and translate well in true colour so I was surprised to find these even more refined, smooth and velvety in texture. (top to bottom) Tie Dye, Bluesaceous and Silver Frost. I know I am an expert but I have always had issues with blue eye colours on dark skin but from these tests, I was pleasantly surprised though I was most curious about whether Bluesaceous would look good on me as these blues on an Asian skin tone tend not to go hand in hand and hand on heart I have never worn a colour like this, I half expect it to look grey and wishy-washy!

It's a highlight for me to show you Shadowline, an innovative take on eye liner because you pick up the colour with the Shadowline tip, then glide along the lashline to create a 'mean' flick of intense colour. What's not to love!

One coat! Just one coat of this stunning, dazzling deep nail colour in Singed.

I am sporting Tie Dye, the darkest shade applied with the eye-shadow brush (white end) and one coat of the black end of the Black/Blue Mascara. Thoughts?

I love it but how far could I go? Could I retain depth and recreate that 'on trend' A/W look?

I really could, by sweeping Tie Dye as close the the lower lash line, with the blending end of the applicator, dabbing Bluesaceous to the centre of the eyelids and a tad on inner eye, followed by Shadowline in the same colour to upper and lower lash lines.

Here's a side shot. I have achieved the 'Blue Eyed Girl' look.

As I mentioned before, I was hesitant about Bluesaceous but I needn't have been. Washed over the entire eye lids looked elegant against my skin tone and gave me an idea of how to wear my make up for a friends December wedding.

And a cheeky coat of the blue mascara added another dimension. I have to stress, I love this blue mascara applied over the black, it catches your eye with an unexpected pop of colour.

This set exceeded my expectations, especially as someone who is rarely drawn to 'blues' or intense colour on my skin, I tend to be a bright lip person but I have been converted. It is at times easy for me to enthuse clients about the use of colour without fear, so my lesson is learnt and at only £12, I feel I have answered those common questions and plenty of my own.

Argan Oil and the healing process.

I wouldn't usually put up such an unsightly post but I thought it necessary to show you how powerful and effective Argan Oil really is. I have known about this natural miracle oil for many years and how beneficial Argan Oil is to skin and hair since my travels to Morocco. I have seen this much like many natural beauty oils like Carrot Coconut and Olive Oil to name a few but many of us might not have experienced seeing vast improvements at first hand with the ever popular Argan Oil.

My partner recently burnt his face with cooking oil which peppered his face in superficial burns. Initially water was splashed over his face to reduce the uncomfortable burning sensation, then cold green tea to soothe, though an hour or so later I began to apply Melvita Argan Oil directly to his skin without fail, every morning and night. Some of these pictures are unpleasant but I hope you realise the positive effects and how skin repairs itself with a little help from natures best.

Day One: First application of Melvita Argan Oil. Skin is sore to touch though no blistering and luckily no brows or lashes were ever burnt.

Day Two: Remarkably reduced redness on the surface and quality of skin is already getting back to normal.

Day Three: Although peppered burns scars have reduced the first blister is appearing around eyes, though quality of skin is improving.

Day Five: Blistering had fully taken shape in Day Four but by the next day showing signs of healing well. Again the speedy healing process to the rest of the face has taken us by surprise!

Day Six: Finally his complexion is fully restored so much I would say the quality and feel are much improved than before. Slight scab finally dried out by Day Eight.

Because Terre d'Oc is worth it!

Lucky me! Always in the loop to test out beauty's high performance products including Terre d'Oc.

Terre d'Oc is an impressive organic brand from France, I say impressive not just because they are Ecocert certified and use Fair Trade ingredients when ever they can, not even because they do not test on animals but because at times organic/mineral make up fails to perform when put up against some leading brands but the concealer, shown above, proves it should be up there with effective and much loved concealers on the market such as Benefit and Bobbi Brown.
I applied this smooth organic Concealer 51 Beige Pur, to a model in her late 50's, half expecting I might have to remove it as I suspected it might sit in the fine lines around her eyes. As glided this waxy texture on the shadows with a brush I was relieved by the coverage, brightening effect and finish so I almost immediately thought I'm onto a winner here! Is there only one shade?
No. There is a warmer version called Concealer 52 Gold Beige suitable for olive to asian skin tones, what a relief!

Next up, these beauties, Eye Kohl available in 6 shades, a product I have missed in my kit for some time and if you've never tried 'real' kohl, this is the closest you'll find on the beauty scene. Easy to apply for a flick, a fine eye line for definition or a sultry fuller eye line which stays put and smudges well if that's required. A bit of a no nonsense product, though to avoid cross contamination be conscience of keeping the tip clean with an antibacterial wipe.

Then, a rare find, a hard working organic Mascara! I've attempted testing other brands and settled on Lavera mascaras as being the best in the natural/organic bracket but now I might have to eat my words with the discovery of Terre d'Oc, which I found gave an even coating over the lashes in a ever true black and left lashes looking lavish in addition to holding up well after a long day without a smudge in sight.

Terre d'Oc is priced well; Concealer being £12, eye khols only £13.95, mascara at a reasonable £17.95, for good quality make up with a conscience!

The Science of Organics.

Here's a little bit of background before I tell you about the actual products. The name is Acquizhen, it is certified organic and sustainable skincare from Germany, which combines 'accurate science with the best of nature', something I find appealing and reassuring when the brand has been developed by Dr. med, Erich Schulte, an advocate of a holistic and traditional approach to skincare. The term 'organic' gets a mixed reception these days and seems less of a buzzword, either customers declare they 'only ever use organic' due to their choice of lifestyle or perturbed customers grimace saying, 'I've tried so many and nothing works for me'.

I'm unsure which camp I'm in, I certainly feel that as a Make Up Artist I am quite toxic from high use of beauty products so a little of what nature has to give is a bonus, though I do expect high performance from skin products, organic or not.

I have applied upteen organic products to my skin in the last few years and would admit to about 50% of them achieving some sort of remarkable effect, though all I am asking for most of the time is good hydration and to be truthfully organic. What I mean by that is, some associations don't expect 100% organic, which is a tall order in any case but if you don't read labels well you might only be applying a product with only one organic ingredient. Misleading and confusing, huh?

Now, moving back to Acquizhen, I thought I'd tell you about the 'unsung heroes' and often the most unremarkable items in an organic range, firstly, Gentle Exfoliating Mask. There are some exfoliators I have used in the past which have tended to be so gentle they make no difference or are too abrasive as they contain 'rustic' grains or seeds of some sort. Acquizhen Gentle Exfoliating Mask has a texture I was familiar with, it actually reminded me of Aapri, which I'd last used in the 80's, the texture was grainy but not harsh, the results were beyond my expectations. I don't know about you but some 'gentle' exfoliators take a fair bit of elbow grease to clear debris, dead skin and eventually quite a few layers of skin which defeats the object but this products did kindly exfoliate, removing blackheads and blocked pores that riddle my skin from using hair products at work. I'm impressed with my skins refreshed appearance and texture after use, one hopes this has something to do with Argan Seeds, Papaya and White Tea extracts among others active ingredients.

I hadn't sampled many organic Night Creams so I was willing to bypass my usual routine for a few weeks and see what effect, if any, Nurturing Night Cream might take. The texture is that of a cream making me a little concerned I might wake up a little puffy as I am used to serums at night, but alas, this weightless cream was comfortable and absorbed well without leaving a saturated surface. My skin woke up feeling soft and replenished, just as I'd wished and by looking at the list of ingredients I see Hyaluronic Acid, which is proven to be the great hydrator and Blackberry leaf, the unfamiliar extract 'which play a significant role in skin aging', I'll have some of that!

As much as I'm jubilant at discovering this well rounded brand there is one thing that impresses me a great deal and that is the high percentage of natural origin, vegetable ingredient and organic farming. I am 100% impressed.

The Brightening Effect!

These Une Beauty Skin Glow pencils have become the neat and nifty products I rely on for quick touch ups on set or to accompany a brightening 'pick me up' for any face. 4 good shades all packaged into slim pencils also mean they are not going to use up much space, so I would say pretty handy for a long day or better still a long night out.
I tend to use these around the eyes and to rid those annoying dark shadows but this is truly versatile as it can be worn along the waterline, plus a few quick strokes around eyes, nose and chin, then a little blending, they add instant '8 hours sleep' results. A stroke of genius!

De-potting Dior!

I feel like a weight has been lifted, in more ways than one. I decided only last week to de-pot my very much loved Dior 5 Colour eye shadows compacts because, er, I haven't found them very compact in my work kit.
I have a number of favourite Dior and Guerlain compacts I regularly use on photoshoots, tv commercial and events that are packaged beautifully and always get a 'oooh', 'ahhh' response from clients but carrying my pretty eye colours have added a little too much weight and with my endless effort to downsize to a more efficient kit I had to bite the bullet and purchase a Scotty's Black Magnetic Palette from what is evidently becoming my second home, Guru Emporium!

A few nights ago, I watched a few tutorials particularly on removing Dior colours, chatted with Z Palette on Twitter and felt a lump in my throat at the thought of possibly destroying these beauty gems I'd grown so fond of. My plan was to buy Z Palette, this seemed to be the most popular choice and I liked the clear cover, which I knew would be a time saver but during my visit to Guru I noticed only small versions that might only fit one compact. I came across Scotty's Palette, this seemed much the same thing, although approximately £5 more than Z Palette but with empty metal pans. Oh well, being slightly impatient about these things I bit that bullet and headed home with a Scotty's palette to remove the outer casing of each compact one by one.

I planned to do the hair straightener trick, this seemed simple enough on the first attempt. I used a very small sharp knife to prize the metal pans, easy peasy! I then tried this without heating the inner case, JOY, they came out quite easily, in fact, I did not destroy one eye colour, OVERJOYED!

I must admit the Guerlain compacts were certainly tricky and took more prizing and patience but all in all I am chuffed with the my new palette and now keen to muster up the patience to create a blush palette!

Some do, some don't, some wouldn't, some airbrush!

There has been plenty of chatter between Make Up Artists' about airbrushing over the years, especially since HDTV took to our TV screens, in fact I remember there being quite a hilarious panic when really it meant 'work neatly, precisely, there is now 8 times more clarity'. These days some do it, some don't, some wouldn't and some haven't found their ideal kit.

I struggled for years contemplating the ideal airbrush gun and compressor for me, which sounds like a simple task but alas, I had the dilemma of my entire kit to think about practically. Compressors aren't light weight and easy to carry. To my mind it's like carrying a generator in your kit and with back issues and an ever growing hair and make up kit averaging 15kg, I was keen to find an airbrush solution that was reasonably priced and not back breaking.

Many years ago, oh crikey, maybe even 10 years ago, I frequently used SKII's Air Touch Foundation on fashion photo shoots but mostly for Black & White photography work with various photographers such as Terry O'Neill, the late Lord Litchfield and John Swanell. The nifty handheld pod was bite-sized, so I had no issues with keeping this in my work bag at all times. The effect was good although at times limited. It was often hard to control; one couldn't get a lighter touch for instance, it had to be one way and one way only. Another downside was that the shades weren't always well matched and being an Asian brand some shades would appear a little too yellow or peachy, though I would always contour and swap the foundation inserts frequently to get achieve the desired effect. It was good while it lasted!

After about 7 years of researching, I finally came across a kit I thought would suit my needs. It was compact, (yey) and the foundations that accompany it focused on ingredients such as Vitamins A and E, which improve the appearance and hydration in the skin, allowing the heat resistant Silicone to appear natural whilst actively longer lasting. The brand is Airbase and has been in my life for almost 4 years.

I'm not sure why I've not blogged about Airbase till now, maybe its because there has been sudden interest, plus I assumed it was geared to being a Pro only brand but alas the public want to know more about Pro techniques and MUA essentials more and more.

Above is a lady I made up for a shoot recently and this photograph was taken a few hours after make up application...yes, lovely eye colour, courtesy of Front Cover Cosmetics but take a look at her skin. From time to time I have people telling me, 'Oh yes, the make up used for TV and Magazines is heavier, right?' Er, no! But I often reply that my aim is for skin to appear as skin though flawless and merely enhanced.

Do I use Airbase in all my work?

No, but I get a feel for a job and lighting conditions etc and decide from that. I originally egged myself to research yet again into getting an airbrush kit after working on a week long Pokerstars TV Ad, which was studio based with dramatic lighting, over 12 players a day and on average 17 hour days. I thought, this is the type of job where an airbrush gun could really show its mettle and make life a little speedier for me with the added bonus of less 'touch ups' on set. (which makes the 1st AD very happy).

What type of jobs have you used Airbase?

I've not only used Airbase for studio based work but would recommend it's use for Black & White photography, it is second to none. I recently found the benefit of airbrushing for a bride and her upteen bridesmaids and mother of the bride too, this saved time and I knew the results would be received well. I have also had the experience of working with burns and scar survivors, who have benefited from airbrushing when their skin is extremely sensitive, therefore, non-contact application can be such a relief. I enjoy the reaction from well established actresses or ladies over 50+ who might have had a bad experience with airbrushed make up or declare it will make their skin look heavily made up, flat and add on years rather than take them away. Once they see how the foundation helps blur imperfections without clogging the pores and diminish fine lines, they are in awe.

What do you most like about Airbase?

I like the results I get every time, who wouldn't? It's fun to mix up the perfect shades and contour with such a nifty gun that is comfortable to hold and easy to determine the finish you want. I would say high on my list is the fact the compressor is no bigger or heavier than a small bottle of water so I tend to keep all my Airbase kit neatly tucked away in a clear plastic make up bag along with 7 shades of foundation, 2 blushers, 1 bronzer, Primer, Mitt and Cleaning/Thinner solution. That's compact!

What do you most dislike about Airbase?

I'm sure most would agree that worst part about any airbrush kit is cleaning it but it has to be done in order to avoid any clogging or damage! Although a little fiddly at times, once you get the hang of it it becomes less of a chore, though it is always good to know the Airbase team are on hand to give you advice over the phone or via email and always happy to assist with technical issues.

Who would you recommend Airbase to?

It is not the cheapest addition to anyone's kit, so I would firmly say Pro's working for Brides, it might change your life and for those in TV, Film, Beauty, Advertising and Fashion it is another dimension and medium, therefore, another useful tool.

Winter Warmer?

It is that time of year when I am dreading the cold, avoiding a cold and desperate to keep fit and energetic for work.

I take my daily dose of Thyroxine every morning before breakfast, which assists my Hypothyroidism, then I gulp a variety of supplements around lunchtime or in the evening.

Just a few...the usual suspects, Vitamin B6 and B12, Chromium, Viviscal, CQ10...

The recent addition and recommendation from a friend in the States, which apparently aids those with under active Thyroid or other Auto Immune Diseases, Maca Root. This 'Peruvian Ginseng' is proving popular in the USA, dare I say as a libido booster but will it help my daytime energy levels?

So far, no signs of that but it has only been a few weeks and I've already been hit with a cold and cough which I put down to a change in weather.

My immune system seems to be in a world of it's own. I am generally good health-wise, I have to be, but I still unfortunately collapse from time to time due to Thyroiditis, which is when my body attacks the Thyroxine replacement. No drama, I know the signs though I feel frustrated when these attacks steal my time.

Maca Root is best taken in powder form, or so the nutrionist says at the Nutri Centre and doesn't taste too bad when a level teaspoon is mixed with a half cup of water. If anything it is a little sweet, almost like watered down honey so I'm finding I am taking it regularly rather than avoiding it.

Hopefully, I can give you an update soon and tell you that I am bursting with energy and not even a snivel or sniff of a cold!

Beauty Alert: The Perfect Red Lip Stylo!

Not many of you seem familiar with this German cosmetics brand but I have had the pleasure of enhancing beautiful faces further with a few key pieces in my kit for some time. The Alcina Eye Brow Liner pencil is a must, a good neutral shade to fill in and create a spectacular arch along with the highlighter on one end, the duo make for precise brows.
But the Alcina Lip Stylo is most remarkable! On looking at this shade of Hot Red you might think of it as an average red with an average finish. Wrong!
The slim design means application is neat whilst the results provide lips with the perfect red, not too dark, not too orange with a velvet finish. At only £10 this is beauty bargain, especially if you're an all year round red lip wearer with a pinched purse from purchasing some of the leading brands that don't always result in 'getting what you pay for'.

After months of brimming with work and nothing warranting 'berry' tones, I finally applied the Alcina Lip Stylo in Light Berry for a recent Marie Claire shoot. My model was fearful it might appear too dark and goth-like but I assured her, this colour would merely add a subtle berry hue and defined lip shape, which it did and so complimented her red and purple outfit for the photoshoot.

I'm falling in love with the Moon Dust loose powder pigment set from Front Cover and who wouldn't?

I haven't given these much of a chance on set but from what I've noticed already is that the pigments are true and once placed on eyes do not drop or dust off, which is great for a speedy, dramatic eye look.

I'm unfamiliar with the shade names as I've thrown away the packaging but there is a range of metallic blue, gold and bronze with weighty glitters you can add on top or use alone.

More than a BB!

Plenty has been said on BB creams in recent months and there are so many on the market but which one to try?

I used these Une BB Cream Foundations on about 8 women last week, all different skin types and complexions, these worked wonders.

To look at, some of the shades appear darker than they do on the skin, choose carefully and maybe one shade up from what you see. The smooth finish and fine texture allows for skin to peep through whilst nourishing and protecting, as well as createing such a beautiful, natural look, that also adds a delicate dewiness. For those with oily skin, this BB Cream Foundation tends to shine well, without caking, for dry skin this adds moisturising properties.

Une's BB are creams; this means speed for application. Get ready for more colour! I know Autumn/Winter doesn't often exude the most vibrant of colour palettes but we like to see a splash here and there.

These warm, russet red/orange shades with flecks of gold are the delectable Dior lip and nail shades ready to launch next week. I have used them on a few shoots and at the recent 'Miss Dress' event, for ladies looking to be styled head to toe by Clare Watson and her team. Some months ago, the very kind people at Konjac Sponge Company offered to send me one of their remarkable sponges, which had already proven a hit with many beauty bloggers (just see from their blog page http://www.konjacspongecompany.com/blog/ I wasn't going to say no, so accepted with great expectations.
A few months later, I told them truthfully that I had attempted to use the French Pink Clay sponge, for hypersensitive skin, a few times but found it drying and unremarkable, though in these past few months I had been overloaded with skincare products and some further health issues, therefore my skin was feeling more delicate than usual. My skin is not in bad 'nick', just the odd blemish but I do suffer from it feeling terribly dry and uncomfortably so due to having Hypothyroidism. This is a common complaint and so I believed this sponge was not right for me so no hard feelings!
I kept my sponge and would occasionally try it again but I found the same complaint, what was I doing wrong? Why are so many people loving it?

Ah, well, now I am not one to be negative about products, if it doesn't work for me or in my kit, then I daren't declare it a 'must-not-have' beauty product, as I am not the masses and one negative declaration is unfair. Last week, I thought my Konjac sponge deserved one more chance seeing as I had given my skin a break from testing skincare delights, had a burst of adequate amounts of Vitamin D and that the weather had changed and had me bustling from air conditioned rooms to central heating to blustery days, this final test should amount to something.

The bad news is, I now have to eat my words, even though I had not been publicly 'slating' Konjac, I did let the lovely Konjac people know that I couldn't blog about it. The good news is, I have found it remarkable and a reliable cleanser for my sensitive skin. My pores are looking clearer, which is great news as I do have areas of open pores around my nose and a tendency to blocked pores when spraying hair product in poorly ventilated rooms at work. I have also found that I was probably not using it confidently enough on my skin, as I was hesitant it might feel harsh and abrasive. The sponge appears to work well pressed firmly to skin and now I can honestly say this is a huge bonus to my beauty routine.
My lesson has been learnt, somethings do come to those who wait a while and give it another go!

I'm not known for being a complete nail expert but of course, needs must and most jobs entail some kind of nail work.

Just like on this Scholl photoshoot. Toes nails and buffed heels were a must, therefore I used my trusty nail kit of scissors, clippers, nail hoof, cuticle remover etc from my Mister Mascara set, that no longer exists it seems, though these nail tools have lasted well, at least 10 years and only just on their way out.

I recently purchased a few items from a reputable pharmacy, to replace the weathered tools though most definitely felt I might be missing something. I was! The Tweezerman Squeeze & Snip Nipper to tame cuticle, rid those hangers on's and with it's own cover.

The Big Brush Blog Post!

'Tools of the trade' is a term used a lot and to a Make Up Artist, this is not just a throw away comment or something of a gimmick, it can define you as an artist.
From a young age I've had a close connection with art and in my early years I played with mediums from oils to charcoal, pastels to watercolour, the brushes or techniques used were at times traditional or experimental and I found my strength grew with watercolour and ink. I loved the fluidity of the wash of colour and the intense outlines from the inks. The bonus was that I could work quickly, whether I was rambling through forests or along coastlines or even sat in a tropical hideaway, I would have time to create a loose impression of anything that captured my eye.

Roll on quite a hefty handful of years as a Make Up Artist, my brushes feel like an extension of my hand which help to create line, washes of colour, intensity and depth, angles and most of all create or enhance beauty. I have wanted to write a post about brushes for some time though I've felt a little stuck as to how to explain how to use brushes; how can one define the touch or pressure of another. Impossible for me, therefore, I am showing you tools I like, that are recent additions to my kit and why I like them. Happy reading!

The Eyelash Curlers: I know that everyone recommends Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers, which are indeed award winning, however, I've found I love the grip and pressure of the Shisedo ones which I've used for over ten years and gather there might not be much difference in it. I've recently tried the Suqqu ones which I find too tight, though maybe in time they will feel right.

The Powder/Blush Brush: Revlon have revamped their brush range with the help of backstage genius, Gucci Westman, with all the will in the world to make a pro-like brush kit as possible. They are not far off, though it is a shame the handles are so short, nevertheless, these synthetic brushes hold up well. The Blush Brush is a superb size for a flush of blush or light dusting of powder to finish.

The Powder/Foundation Brush: I'm pleased to say Make Up For Ever have once again hit my radar, particularly this popular flat top style brush for an airbrushed effect. I like the size and firmness from the mix of Goat and Nylon hair, plus the fact it doesn't moult like other brands (I shan't mention) that are on the market. I can lightly buff on a liquid or cream foundation, even mineral powders to achieve a soft veil of coverage.

The Angled Foundation Brush: Not only is this Cruelty/Vegan Free and a good looking brush to say the least, the Cozzette has been a welcome addition to my brush roll. I have always been a fan of the Cover FX synthetic and natural foundation brushes, No.170 Precision Foundation Brush and No.160 Cream Foundation Brush and continue to use these, though what with the ever changing face of foundations I feel I can cover more ground with speed, around contours of the face, with the Cozzette P300 with the help of its angled design.

The Concealer Brush (or is it?): I rarely use this as a concealer brush but when I do the precision is there and most definitely works for clever concealing around the eyes, however I think the Mii brush works as a decent lip brush! The gentle tip assists with ease around the lip line so too the firmness of the brush for extreme colour application.

The Brow/Lash Brush: These types of brushes really haven't moved on and when I get the chance I'd like to redesign them. However, over the years I have destroyed many of these brow/lash brushes as they cannot withstand pressure or bend too easily and fail to retain their stiffness. I find Chanel have a good enough design to take the pressure plus the sturdy handle means its unlikely to get chucked in the bin any time soon.

The Angled Brow Brush: I cannot tell you how much I am a brow person. The thought of plucking someone's brows into shape excites me (yes, I must get out more) but brows really do frame the face and can make or break a look. This brush is such a winner, as well as being able to fill in brows whilst retaining softness, I can steady the brush to draw in an immediate arch effortlessly. This is most certainly a gem and worth every penny!

The Blending Brush: As much as I am technical, I don't always like a brush to be labelled as 'blending', 'socket' brush. Obviously, you choose a brush to achieve results and being experimental about it helps to create individual style! This Guru Blending Brush blends well into the eye area and sockets in a heart beat and at times I find I use it for pressing in eye colour, even glitters, quickly onto eye lids and sometimes for highlighting the brow bone.

The Flat Eyeshadow Brush: This is a supersoft brush, as all Suqqu brushes are, with quite a few uses one being cream eyeshadow, second being pressed eyeshadow to achieve a smooth, even finish and with its flat design glides along the lower lash line very well. I have used this as a concealer brush too!

The Rounded Eyeshadow Brush: A rounded brush such as this is superb for sockets and softening eyeshadow as well as cream eyeshadow around the eye shape. I find Suqqu brushes exceptionally soft, easy to clean and although they are not cheap, I can bet they will be in my kit for at least ten years.

The Blusher Brush: The Suqqu Cheek brush has become a talking point. I use this on almost every make up job and without fail once it is touching someone's cheeks they declare the softness is second to none. I think the brush itself is so small it most likely just tickles cheeks but saying that I do get a lovely natural, contoured colour to cheeks.

The Lip Brush: In recent years lip brushes all seemed to be much of a much, quite rounded or have ridiculous points which never held up after once wash making me reach for eye liner or concealer brushes, so when I acquired my Suqqu Lip Brush, I felt a sigh of relief, it looks, feels and is a lip brush. I like the flat top which I can work around a lip line for a perfect line, especially for the ever popular 'red lip'. The price I do not know but I imagine it to be at the higher end, though I must insist the natural hair is exquisite and has not lost it's shape.

Eye spy something to shout about!

I wasn't planning to mention Natura Bisse products I was recently sent as a thank you but have to give praise to this little god send!
I'm currently working on a TV job and most of this month has been full of TV commercials equalling long days, ridiculously early starts and effectively looking pretty tired, some might say haggard. Although I tend to look tired regardless of a heavy workload or not, I have never found an eye cream that assists in allowing all day luminosity until now. Don't get me wrong, I will continue to alternate my Avon Anew Eye Lift and Ole Henriksen Truth About Eyes at night to keep puffiness at bay but daytime brightness hasn't been discovered for a long time as I crave a lightweight consistency only.
Natura Bisse is a luxurious brand with claims of remarkable results, I'm sold! Every time I've had the pleasure of using NB I've been impressed, although the price tag can be a little off putting. The Cure Sheer Eye, however is around the £100 mark but I believe it's worth every penny as you only need a drop of product from the pump dispenser, to pat around the eye area. The texture is very slightly waxy and has a sheer tint of beige which works on my mid to dark complexion. My eyes are left with a sheen all day which softly blurs my naturally deep shadows.
I feel quite addicted to this brightness now and knowing that it looks so natural and feels lovely...the claim is clearly stated 'provides anti wrinkle effect' and it does! The downside is, I can't seem to find a UK link for this product. One thinks an online petition to get this over to the UK pronto is a must!

These are some lovely perfume range of the Fragrance Library I came across at a recent visit to the Make Up Store, Carnaby Street, W1. I thought they'd make a nice present or token for someone special.

To choose the right scent, rather than smell each bottle, you choose by reading the descriptions on the box. I'm sure most of us might select by colour and seeing as I was drawn to the orange motif of Less Is More, I was pleased to read about pureness and simplicity. What a great personalised pressie!

Happy Cosmetics are a jolly good bunch who bring some lovely skincare to the UK market. I've been testing a few products from the range which is supposed to enhance my happiness with it's "happiness molecule", plant extracts which stimulate the release of beta-endorphins that work directly into the skin.

I'm not sure they go this far but I have certainly found that I would be happy buy more and to keep using Fabulous Cleanser. This soap-free formula, which cleverly pumps out foam for a gentle cleanse, is a great way to rid skin of daily grime. On hot, sunny days I like to get home, foam up with water to take off the surface dirt and then perform a deeper cleanse in the evening.

And for that deeper cleansing routine I would include this Blue Lagoon Scrub, a scrub like you've never seen.

Delicate beads which slough off dead skin gently and you only need a small amount. A little goes a long way! Skin is left feeling utterly clean, smooth and black head free!

Then Wonder Cream, perfect moisturiser for locking in hydration, though I found I needed quite a lot to get my skin to feel really hydrated all day, therefore, I would apply a small amount, let it sink in, then about 5-10 minutes later, reapply another 10p sized amount and I'd be happy!

The texture is whipped up to a rich cream and smells so good which is always important with skincare and seeing as this is 60 Euros! The combination of these products are really good though I do think I'd rather alternate these with other brands so they last that bit longer.

3D Repair for hair?

I'll be honest, I wasn't going to try this haircare product, not because it was inexpensive or that I was being a snob but because I thought it wouldn't achieve the results I required.

A few months ago, a hairdresser recommended a premium brand and certainly not a cheap one to use on my weakened hair, to reduce unsightly frizz and to condition without making my hair appear lank. I believed it was working, as it did reduce some of the frizz, though not fully and didn't feel like it had left residue in my hair. It did make some difference when blow drying as it kept the hair shaft quite smooth. Though, when I tried Avon Advance Techniques Damage Repair 3D Rescue, a lightweight, creamy fluid, similar to most conditioners, I was most surprised to find it was hydrating the dry ends and taming the shaft of my hair from root to tip. I admit I assumed something stating '3D Repair' would be a thick, oily consistency and only work on course, dry hair, the opposite to me thick but soft hair but there was not one feeling of greasy residue even though this is a leave-in formula. I only needed a pound coin sized amount to towel dried hair for reliable results whether I decide to blow dry my hair or leave to dry naturally.
The general condition and look of my hair is replaced with smooth and frizz-free until the next use and to end this blog on a high, Avon Advance Techniques Damage Repair 3D Rescue is currently only £4.50 as opposed to £6.50.

Positano : Part Due!

I had written a post about 'Positano' not too long ago http://nadiramakeup.blogspot.com/search/label/Positano in which I told you more about my experience on a quick job in breathtaking surroundings, than anything else but what was the job?

Who was the client?

I can now reveal that I was sent on what had seemed a vague work trip to Italy in early July, in which I was thinking I was to be the Make Up Artist and Hair Stylist to Collette Dinnigan for a portrait shoot. When I arrived in Naples, with the Photographer, David Lotfus it was revealed I would actually be getting Collette and her daughter ready for her marriage to the dashing, Bradley Cocks. The couple soon told me they wanted a private, relaxed day in exquisite surroundings away from it all.

And here is a photograph of the happy couple, looking radiant and relaxed with Collette in one of her own unique designs, of course!
I have already revealed much of the beauty route Collette requested in my earlier post, which was natural with a hint of definition and this was achieved with Eylure lashes amongst other beauty favourites!
Collette's tresses are beautiful, long and very long in fact, so then suited a little textured wave, achieved with a tiny amount of Sebastian Potion 9 for some hold, then random tonging with a larger barrell around the front sections. This complimented the delicate crown she wore and was also the best style in 85% humidity. I wish more brides would go for such a ethereal, understated look to enhance their real beauty. Collette made a very elegant bride indeed.

The Science of Skin.

As you know by now, I am not going to get into the science part of a product not only because you can access that information yourselves but also I'd like to give you my honest perspective on a product or range. Basically, does it work and does what it says it will do?

Skin Science is a Scandinavian brand I've seen and heard about but had never hit my radar until I was asked to try them recently.

There are skincare brands that I totally adore and which you can read about on my blog but I don't love every brand I try, though Skin Science is one I am finding I would never want to run out of!

Ok, so I lied, a little bit of science. Skin Science introduces 'ultra potent antioxidant Spermine' which claims to achieve visible and lasting results plus 'Spermine is proven to be 25 times stronger than Vitamin E'. I am doubtful of 'anti-ageing' results from any skincare but what I do believe in is healthy skin and I find the Bio Active 24hr Protective Complex Cream SPF 15 assists in this very well. Whilst wearing this hydrator in the morning after cleansing, I noticed the initial feeling of moisture in my skin lasted all day. Gold star for this and for the fact it looks suitably radiant on my complexion too.

I occasionally combine the Complex Cream after applying Bio Active Stimulating Serum as an added boost for my dry skin, I love how this feels and most definitely the toning effect after all they say, 'Thanks to its immediate deep penetration it works on all layers of the skin.'

These Bio Active Instant Replenishment Complex ampoules in addition to the hydrators are incredibly effective when used two or three times a week after cleansing to saturate the skin with the Spermine and work deeply. I believe about one third of an ampoule is best applied after cleansing at night so that you have optimum chance of replenishment and repair. These potent pods can also be used after invasive treatment ie. laser or acid peels.

The Brush off!

Body Brushing, we've all heard of it and know the benefits of stimulating circulation, toning, eliminating toxins but do any of us actually do it?

I am a fan and last year discovered improvements to the quality of my skin, especially smoothness so I continued to perform this ritual two or three times a week. Traditionally, dry body brushing has proven to be most effective, though this just does not appeal and yes, can feel a little harsh even when using oils, therefore, I like to wet the body brush and douse with shower gel. I am likely to be hosed down by the 'Beauty Brigade' for this but really it is the most invigorating shower to be had and doesn't delete the benefits mentioned above as I still use small strokes upwards, towards the heart.

I have tried many high street brands to find the sturdiest body brush but it has to be said, Aromatherapy Associates do the best yet, even though the wood discolours somewhat due to using water, the natural cactus sisal bristles retain their stiffness and the wooden handle is firm.

I am continually on the look out for ways to improve circulation, to get my lymph glands working to reduce water retention and this is it, I think!

Beauty Alert: Semi Permanent Mascara!

I'm not someone who takes semi permanent or permanent procedures lightly, no Botox for me, not even fillers. I am a scaredy cat and like to think I could grow old gracefully with the assistance of skincare brands on the market. But what about enhancing?

Semi Permanent Mascara by Flutter, really appealed to me not only as they are 100% waterproof but it could save me time in the morning and add depth to my long yet fine eye lashes. Just the thought that I could literally 'wash and go' with one less step from my beauty routine was enough to have me booking in. I'm certainly not a 'high maintenance' girl but what little I do do takes time and I am looking rather shabby and tired these days. (Yes, Mum, I will never change!)

My lash treatment began with Kathryn Popplestone, the Flutter founder, removing all traces of make up from around my eyes and lashes. N.B. Notice extra long lashes I've acquired since using M2 Beaute!

The lashes are being separated here to make sure they don't cross over or stick together. The goal is for lift and separation.

A similar procedure was done to complete the lower lashes with the entire enhancement taking just 45 minutes.

Here is a close up of the complete look. I could have gone for more but I really wanted to see if they could achieve how I usually where mascara and Flutter did. My mission when I got home was to make sure not one drop of water touched my lashes, luckily there were no tears before bedtime and this morning my lashes are 100% waterproof! Semi Permanent Mascara would be ideal for holidays especially beach ones, for avid gym users and swimmers or basically if you'd like to wake up looking half decent and done.

At only £60 - £80 for the 30 to 45 minute treatment, depending on where you live, it doesn't appear to break the bank. Flutter girls flit to anywhere in London and home counties in the South East, though soon heading further North.

Aftercare is always an issue for some but its a necessity, therefore, as long as I avoid oil based make up/ remover and use water based ones instead, my lashes should remain looking this good for 2 to 4 weeks and yes, I can still wear mascara! These handy capsules are not eye drops but La Roche-Posay Eye Make Up Removers packaged in such a nifty way I had to mention them on my blog!
They do remind me of the clever designs from Lisa Hoffman, mentioned on my blog, (see archives) and I love them, therefore I was thrilled at seeing a skincare item so space saving and an ideal travel product.

Do they remove every trace of eye make up, gel liner, eye shadow and mascara?
Yes, they remove all eye make up thoroughly.

Do they remove waterproof mascaras too?
I have not tried as yet, though what I enjoy most is the clean finish and zero residue, if anything my eyes feel refreshed and ultimately that I am removing my eye make up in the most gentle way, after all it is such a delicate area of the face.

How do they fair against regular eye make up removers?
You'll never use too much so this is cost effective skincare as you gently squeeze a small amount onto a cotton pad. Most beauty experts would agree, never remove eye make up with the same cotton pad, this lowers any risk of contamination and infection, a no brainer, meaning this is an ideal product for keeping hygiene high. Just dampen one cotton pad, press onto closed eye in downward motion and refrain from rubbing.

These are a great addition to my kit and my make up bag and if I don't use the entire capsule in one cleanse, I just press the lid back on for the next time.

I am a fortunate to travel with my job and go to some beautiful places. Most recently Positano, near Sorrento, Italy, a breathtaking remote place by the sea. The job was vague and even now I'm not sure I can reveal much but thought I'd share this romantic setting with you and how brief some of these jobs can be.

This was the view from my balcony in the morning of my job. I had flown in late the night before with the photographer, David Loftus then driven along the windy roads from Naples airport to Positano. I had been warned I might get car sick, I certainly felt my stomach leap a few times.

The job itself was just a few hours, I began prepping hair at 9.45 am, then completed the make up of soft bronze tones using Dior Rosy Tan 5 Colour Palette on the eyes along with Eylure Individual Lashes, Ellis Faas Skin Veil as a light base and finally Carmex Moisture Plus in Clear. Hair was styled to a relatively textured style, a slight wave, perfect for 85% humidity.

My taxi picked me up at around 1 pm to drive the one and a half hour journey back to Naples airport for my flight back to the UK. I told you it was short and sweet!

Garden Party Style in the heart of London!

Last Saturday's St Martins Courtyard Garden Party was a relaxed affair with Pimms on tap, face painting and a set from songbird, Sunday Girl.

I was lucky enough to prep the songstress with a quick hair and make up session. The mood was of a 60's vibe, Bardot-esque smouldering eyes with nude lips and hair, roughly textured with a hint of a wave.

Then here are a few shots of the models that my team and I prepared for the fashion shows. The inspiration for hair and make up was conjured up by lazy summer days, picnics and festivals, hence the under-styled, textured tresses and subtle pastels, applied as block shades in 'granny' greens and blues on the eyes up to the brow bone, along with a pale coral shaping lips.

Picture this. You're sat watching TV, the ad breaks start to appear. You find yourself immersed in the world of advertising and sometimes think, 'Why am I watching this? It's so awful, its good!'

You may find yourself thinking this with the new Sun Bingo TV Ads currently hitting your screens with another 'can't get that out of my head' style jingle, 'Sun Bingo, Sun Bingo, Sun Bingooo.....'

As much as I work hard and single handedly to gain recognition for advertising campaigns, events and yes, celebrity shoots when I perfect familiar faces, I also duck into TV and for the past 10 years or so TV commercials, equalling long days, ridiculous hours and bizarre briefs.

Recently, I was optioned for a few days by a production company, then soon after I had a similar conversation to this with the Producer of the commercial.

'Nadira, so the client would like the hair to resemble bubbles. Different sizes randomly floating off the actresses head.' 'Ok!', I said. 'I have a few ideas, I will get back to you shortly.'

'Oh and one more thing, Nad!' 'Yep?', I replied. 'She will be dancing around...a lot.'

If you're following me on Twitter, you may have seen me mention 'hairballs', well, here they are and now you know why I made them. Each one was made by hand (sometimes till very late at night), some taking approximately 25 minutes each, by teasing crepe hair and covering with bun nets to retain a ball shape. I made about 40 of these.

And here's a closer look at Ms Bingo Bubbles herself, the hugely talented, hilarious and cryptic crossword addict, Elizabeth Bower.

The mood decided for Bingo Bubbles was that of a 50's or 'retro' feel, with energy, vibrancy and a pop of colour. As you can imagine the hair and make up process took a few hours and Elizabeth was extremely patient to be prodded and poked as well as allowing me to spray colour into her hair each day for the 3 day job.

The foundation I used has become a firm, reliable staple in my kit, Iman Stick Foundation. For such a long, energetic day for the actress, this base needed only to be lightly dabbed with blotting sheets and gently pressed with a pressed powder along Elizabeth's nose. Eye shadow and Glitter liner were courtesy of Sleek, eye liner Clinique Brush On Gel Liner, eye brows Alcina Eye Balance and lashes by Blink & Go in Temptress no.5.

After painstakingly securing each hairball to towering proportions, I finished off Bingo Bubbles with a hint of Givenchy blush in Blooming Fuchsia and a glorious YSL Rouge Volupte lip colour.

So what now? Where are the 'Bingo Bubbles'?

On my search for the perfect red for a good friend of mine, I stumbled across this vivid red which was tucked away in my 'haven't tried it yet but will' bag in my beauty office.

Some of you fine ladies and avid 'red lippie' wearers, including my dear friend, probably have an ever growing stash of all kinds of red lipsticks due the ongoing search for the perfect red.

Instant Lift!

We all want instant results don't we?

I would certainly love to find that one workout gives me an immediate toned physique but who am I kidding?

If I can't have that then what else is there?

Lengthy lift to my lashes? Yes, please and I may just have found the magic mascara to enable just that!

Before I reveal the brand and product name, just take a look at my eye with no sign of make-up first thing this morning.

I am, some would say a complete convert to eye lash curlers but not today, I am really giving this new mascara (which is not out until the end of August) a thorough test-drive. One coat has been applied to my lashes and already we have lift and definition. Also, this true black mascara dries quickly but remains flexible enough to apply more should you wish to.

I didn't stop there. Another coat and more lift, in fact, are they even real?

Last week, I wore this mascara twice and each day someone stopped me in mid-conversation to ask if my lashes were real, what am I using and where can I purchase this 'false-effect' mascara, NOW?

Here she is and what a beauty! Yes, this miracle lift mascara is from those clever minxes at Benefit who have created the ultimate wand. Notice the plastic bristles at the top of the wand; sphere-like to nudge those lashes to full capacity and beyond.

And here is a better look at 'they're Real' in it's hourglass packaging, something of a nice surprise from Benefit to tantalise us with a slick bullet of impact and sophistication.

My only concerns, although I am truly impressed with 'they're Real', is that it may dry up quite quickly and run out in no time but only time will tell.

I love talking nail colours and more often than not, bright shades, which are a little playful and work well against my skin colour. Since April, I've worn all shades of coral, occasionally beige, though generally towards a more orangey palette but never deep or darker shades, never!
Seeing as our summer seems to have gone AWOL, I have vowed to continue to wear my wintry attire and today, I adopted this idea to my toe nails using Rituals Amber Stone. I adore this warm grey shade! In daylight it adopts an aubergine-like tone which makes it extremely flattering on all skin tones, certainly more than other 'greys' I've accumulated overtime, plus tends to be a popular, though curious choice in my nail kit. Sadly, there aren't many clients who recognise Rituals extend their cosmetics range to nail colours. Therefore, they deserve a mention as they are exceptionally good.

In an attempt to achieve longer lasting colour, I prepped toes with Andrea Fulerton Nail Boutique Pre-Varnish Prep, without doubt this is a genius product and dries quickly to prepare the nail bed with a smooth, residue-free canvas. I then applied Rituals Amber Stone, one coat I might add, just one, yes, one! The brush does all the work so I painted with ease, then finished off with Rituals Top Coat, which I class as one on the most effective top coats on the market; it lasts, remains shiny for up to 5 weeks and creates the ultimate finish.
I now can't stop looking at my feet, maybe as I am used to a bright pop of colour beaming back at me but I think more so because I love this intense, stoney shade and delighted at the quality finish of Rituals. I dare you to try a new shade and above all, try a brand you've not tried, you could be pleasantly surprised!

Is there an aid to healthy hair?

I've reported many a time about my hairloss and all the natural or bizarre remedies I've tried but since growth and thickening have gradually taken shape, how have I managed to keep my hair well maintained and in good condition?
I used to be a once-a-day hair washer in my youth, when I would style my hair using the latest styling range and attempt super sticky coiffed looks from either an entire can of mousse or bottle of gel spray. These days, I couldn't think of anything worse and love to be product-free to feel silky soft hair and see a natural sheen on my locks, which is why I now try not to wash my hair too often. Vigorous washing in hot water can lead to more weakness, especially around the hairline and that is the last thing I need, therefore a relaxed approach to my routine has me washing every few days alternating between an organic range and Viviscal Shampoo and Scalp Cleanser.

Before using Viviscal Shampoo and Scalp Cleanser, I have to admit I felt a faint pang and an expectation that this product would smell medicinal. Then I thought I might feel a grimy residue in my hair whilst rinsing as you find with so many thickening shampoos. I then anticipated my hair would feel thicker yet dull and difficult to style. I was wrong on ALL accounts and 'it does what it says on the tin' with the aid of stimulating ingredients: wheat proteins, Vitamin E, Caffeine and Panthenole (VitB6) to optimise growth and healthy hair.
Mission accomplished!

Yet another blogabout Sleek Cosmetics Eye Colour Palettes! Yes and I have good reason, they area decent staple and this palette in Monaco is a good mix of brights and neutralshades. Perfect for daytime to occasion!

I used Sleek backin the early 90's when I was beginning my career as a Make Up Artist with a lowbudget for purchasing darker foundation shades for my kit. Back then itwas not so easy to find a brand that would stretch from olive or tanned to darkshades. The quality wasn't too good but it filled a whole for a littlewhile. Their eye shadows never hit my radar which is why I am beyond thrilledto see a versatile palette such as this.

During my trip to Superdrug, whilst prepping for a TV commercial I also came across Sleek Glitter Eyeliners, Hollywood a star studded gold and the minty spangly, Mojito. I was impressed with the palette and found these equally fabulous.

As part of my research into the character for this TV commercial I came up with this sparkly combo for eye make up. I like the sheen and lime green hue of Kiwi Zest combined with the glitter of Mojito, it fits my brief well, although I may prefer a matte eye shadow instead. All in all it was a pleasant surprise to have this brand back in my kit. Keep it up!

Is there any point in me declaring my love of Bourjois So Delicate when they are being discontinued?
Maybe not, but I thought I'd bring these velvety soft lippies to your attention so you can go grab them before they go!
The rosey hues of this range are subtle yet the powdery finish reveals a subtle block that works well with the ever popular smokey eyes or with more neutral earthy tones.
I have a stash of these lipcreams which I shall be using carefully as I wear these myself and I am sad to see this range disappear. As with most discontinued items beauty companies tend to launch something similar yet with an improved formulation. Let's hope this is the case.

Eyes and Shine to Metallics!

My creative juices have been flowing this week and didn't stop for a moment on the Maximiliano Centini Salon photoshoot. The 'look and feel' were discussed before the photoshoot though Max is always open to individual interpretation, so once I'd seen the clothes and the beauty lighting from Vic Singh as well as the hairstyles Max was aiming to achieve I was well away.

Our model, Flora was ready for stage 1! I decided to focus on her skin once her hair had been washed of colour and further prepped so began by cleansing her skin with Bioderma Sensibio H2O, then applying Iman Cosmetics Under Cover Agent Oil Control Primer then 'smoking up' her eyes with Ellis Faas Creamy Eyes E104 for a dark smouldering base.

I then washed over the eyelids with a metallic bronze from Ellis Faas Eye Lights in E303 for a highlight yet without taking away from that 'smoky' feel and continuing the colour up to the brow bone but avoiding the inner eye.

I then dabbed Iman Cosmetics Luxury Liquid Liner in Platinum around the eyeduct which created another dimension and edgier contrast.

The final touches to the eyes were again to achieve fluidity and light. I added depth to the sockets with more Ellis Faas Creamy Eyes E104, gently glided Avon Glimmerstick in Twilight Sparkle to Flora's water line for extra sparkle and depth, then attached a few Eylure Individual Lashes to the outer corners to elongate the eyes with a light coat of DiorShow Mascara in Black. After filling in the brows with the fairest shade from Clarins Pro Brow Palette, I then speedily achieved a flawless, contoured base with Iman Cosmetics Stick Foundation in Sand 4 and Clay 3 then buffed on Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheers, 11 onto the highest part of the cheeks and 13 to shade a subtle yet defined cheekbones.

The lips were a delicate hint of coral from Givenchy in Blooming Apricot , no lip liner for this look as I was keen to keep it looking slightly haphazard and carefree. The clear shine I applied to eyes, MAC Gloss, really set off this look and made for an edgier finish for metallic eyes.
There are quite a few steps but to avoid a 'panda' look focus and start applying to the outer corners for more depth of colour and keep skin 'real' and lips barely there.

The truth is, I'm just tired.

Always busy, therefore, always tired but how to beat puffy, fatigued eyes and look fresh as a daisy?
On my recent quest to find a soothing eye cream and avoid looking half asleep, I was introduced to Ole Henriksen Truth Is In The Eyes, a clear gel concentrate with the most gentle peeling action to assist anti-fatigue around the fragile eye area, with ingredients that claim to boost collagen production plus 'brighten, lighten and tighten', I was not going to miss this trick.

I have been patting a minute amount around my eyes both day and night, a much smaller amount than is pictured (I got a little carried away but at least you can see the consistency). A little goes a long way and for £57 for a 21g tube, rightly so!
The results haven't been taking my breath away...c'mon, what could visibly restore years of late nights though not all alcohol induced, lack of sleep and long working hours! What I am pleased to tell you is I now wake up in the morning without looking like someone has inflated my eye contours but instead performed a calming, ceremonious eye massage.
This products is most definitely becoming my best beauty companion, a few extra hours sleep in a tube.

Rockin' them nails and bling!

Ok, so I wouldn't usually plaster my nails in something quite so bling but at a recent press event I thought, 'Why not?'
This is Nail Rock on my thumb and it did get the thumbs up. These designer nail wraps are speedy to apply once you've prepped your nails by removing nail polish, shaping the edges and buffing the surface to reduce the chances of lumps and bumps. After selecting the correct size, place onto nail, blast some heat directly for a few seconds, then manipulate onto the nail plate and trim edges. Blingo! You have super fast designs in seconds.
Mine were applied on Wednesday by the sought after nail technician, Zoe Pocock, since then I've worked, shopped, showered, bathed, washed dishes, typed and they have remained in tact till today with only slight wear and tear to the tip, impressive, I think so too. I am now keen to try a tamer style like the black and purple leopard print....!

Pixi Best Picks!

If you're not familiar with Pixi then now might be the time to stop and take note. It's a pretty looking brand encapsulating girly essentials from lip glosses to bronzers. Ah, the bronzers! Pixi have a new bronzing palette for Spring but I just cannot stop using their past season Pixi Lumi Lux Bronze Palette which beautifies many skin tones. The soft pink, bronzed and beigy fairies create contours and highlights as well as flush of colour onto cheeks, there most versatile product I'm sure you'd agree.
The soft, waterproof eye pencil pictured is Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen in Black Tulip, a smouldering midnight blue/purple, which I've been using to finish off smoky eyes by applying along the water line or to add depth to the socket line. It's a superb alternative to black especially if you're fair or bored of black.

The Status Quo of Healthy Hair.

I've been getting some compliments about the condition of hair of late, I'd like to think my diet supports the strength, look and feel of my hair but with environmental damage less and less out of our control, the shampoos and conditioners we choose should be caring, kind with genuine results.
I've never tried organic hair care before and to be honest, I wasn't expecting a lot but Organic Care Systems Status Quo has been a welcome addition to my bathroom routine.

I have colour treated hair so I want to maintain the colour, this is where this range excels as it 'helps reduce colour fade', plus 'leaves the hair smooth, naturally soft and protected from uv damage'. For me, it does this and more, my hair feels silky, clean and the gentle cleansing lathers up and rinses out without residue. Here they are! The fabulous products I have been raving on about. Firstly, Avon Glimmerstick in Blackest Black, one of five shades now on offer, which is a truly drag-free black. The twist up liner looks like many liners on the market but what I love about it is the fact that it lasts and lasts without budging and doesn't fade for 24 hours, although they underestimate by saying 12 hours. If you haven't mastered gel liner yet or prefer a good old fashioned eye liner pencil then this is for you.

Secondly, I've been wearing the Glimmerstick with Avon SuperEnchant Mascara, currently on special offer, which claims to maximise lashes to appear fuller and longer and oh boy, this mascara does that due to it's enormous hour-glass wand which makes application very easy. Does it stay in place?

I really put it to an extreme test after wearing it all day by taking a shower, hot, steamy, the lot, it did hold up well with minimal smudging, so it's a relief to know it would go the distance in spring showers! Ding Dong, happy shopping!

I'll be damned if I get more wrinkles from extreme sun damage. Don't get me wrong, although I have an all year round tan and believe you can't beat some Vitamin D rays for a mood boost, I would never been seen without sun protection.
Clarins 50+ not only tames unsightly lines due to dehydration this face cream cleverly adds SPF coverage at a scorching 50! I've heard many a person claim sun lotions reveal a pasty white tinge, not this one as its refined enough in a light formulation, which is easily absorbed and comfortable so would be non-sticky in any sudden sand storm.

Natural Beauties!

I've been testing more natural products in my kit, namely Neal's Yard Remedies cosmetics. The collection is small but a welcome relief to loyal users, who have been demanding a 'no fuss' make up range with organic and mineral ingredients.
There are plenty of beauty myths around 'natural' make up brands, 'wishy-washy', drying and bland. Well, although minute, this range is simple and so far has decent essentials: eye shadow, eye liner and lip gloss.
The eye liners glide on well with the added bonus of being smudgeproof, though on my skin the black doesn't quite look so true, which is a shame for me and anyone with olive to dark skin tones. Eye shadows add a subtle wash in very neutral shades but the best product of all in my opinion has to be the lip glosses. They have a balm-like texture, really exquisite to apply with surprisingly good staying power and without a 'gluey' feel, English Rose being my fav!

One week and one day of trialling what I believe it is a truly sensible way to care for skin inside and out. But before I tell you more, what state was my skin in?
I have a healthy enough diet, though a real weakness for chocolate, pretty good nonetheless, no wheat/gluten, very little dairy and I believe these deductions assist in me having well behaved skin. I drink plenty of water but still find my skin lacks that plumpness it used to have and yes, this is called 'the ageing process'. Boring but true!
I have embarked on this trial, taking three supplements a day (which was approved by my Doctor), this slightly less than the recommended requirement but each week I will step it up to the ideal dosages and to be honest I just felt a little cautious as to how I might feel physically with new supplements as I usually take 13 supplements a day of vitamins, minerals and much needed medication. Alongside these unique dietary supplements I am using a cleanser and moisturiser all of which are by the brand Priori which I am gradually falling in love with. Clever technology and advanced approach to skincare indeed.

The Dietary Supplements Priori Advanced AHA - nourishes body and skin and stimulates metabolism, CoffeeBerry - antioxidant and improves circulation and Idebone - enhanced anti-ageing abilities such as energy, protects cells and organs. These all work alongside their own product range so I am hoping for 'remarkable' results by taking all supplements plus using Advanced AHA Gentle Facial Cleanser and Skin Renewal Cream. Advanced AHA is a skincare system which says "works by improving skin health and fitness through internal moisturisation of the skin". Is it too soon to say 8 days in?
Actually no, its not! I really do see clearer pores, some plumpness and I love wearing the moisturiser, so soft, lightweight and 24 hours of hydration. As for the supplements, so far so good. I did have a moment on day 3 when I decided to take them in the morning after breakfast as they say 'preferably with a meal', unfortunately, felt my heart fluttered uncomfortably so lunchtimes or dinner time is more suitable for me.

Tools are a vital part of beautifying and preening and I would be lost without my Tweezerman Tweezers and accessories for myself and my kit.

I'm forever getting asked, 'Have you had your teeth whitened?' To which my reply is always, no, I just brush my teeth like everybody else, twice daily, sometimes 3 times a day on a long shoot day. But maybe I don't have the same routine as everybody else and I certainly don't have a secret formula.

For over 10 years now, I have been brushing my teeth with an electric toothbrush, my first Oral B Braun was given to me by my sister for my birthday, I'd always wanted one and nothing compares to this cleaning system as it really does feel like you've newly sprung teeth, squeaky clean!
I've upgraded a few times and what with some amazing half price Boots offers over the years and currently in store now, I've settled on my 2 year old Professional Care Oral B Braun set.

Toothpaste? Yes, there is a minefield of toothpastes promising all sorts...whiter than white teeth, tartar control, 24 hours of oral hygiene. Personally, I think if you weren't blessed with white teeth from birth then you've little chance of achieving a Hollywood smile cheaply and after all, its about dental care and hygiene.

However, I have found a toothpaste I like and would be hard pushed to try any other brand at this stage because Blanx really does work for me. I am an avid coffee drinker, I drink mine black and my tea too, so stain removal is a must. Over the years my teeth have become more sensitive and I find this seems to keep that problem under control. The one snag is price, at almost £8 you may have to think long and hard but consider it a long term investment, plus it lasts for months so likely to work out at under £3 per month.

Along with my trusty Oral B Braun Electirc Tootbrush and my new Oral B Floss Action head, which looks large and awkward but really does get into those nooks and crannies, I shall hopefully continue to have healthy teeth, regular check ups and relief at sharing a simple way to have gleaming teeth.

Yes, I'm guilty, I hold my hands up!
I do use some very expensive, hard to find products but not always. Today, I have been using Soap & Glory Bright Here Bright Now along with Hocus Focus. My skin is getting drier these days, even in this glorious weather so as I whisk through rich, nourishing moisturisers I crave more 24/7 dewiness on the surface.

Seems as though I have found it in these more 'cosmetic' than 'skincare' products as Bright Here Bright Now leaves a balmy sheen when mixed with pearlescent glistening of Hocus Focus and hours of luminousity.

I am currently testing Cosmetics a la Carte Brow Inks which are available in 3 'hair tone' shades....I love the fact I can literally apply each hair when filling in brows for an extended or high arched brow. One to watch! Look out for more pictures soon.
This post is dedicated to one of my all time favourite actresses, Elizabeth Taylor, who had the best brows in the business. RIP Ms Taylor.

For me, the 60’s possesses all that I adore about the look and Sophia Loren, for one, owned it whilst today’s Hollywood beauty, Eva Mendes interprets it with envious results. Loren’s deliberate upward black eye line top and bottom, intense matte mud-brown shadow on the eye lids like Burberry Sheer Eye Shadow Taupe Brown 07 and a full, yet not solid, high arched brow; today this could be created using Suqqu Liquid Brow Pen which subtly fills in the gaps to create a natural brow. Loren focused on her eyes, emphasised and elongated the shape by drawing along the lower lash line, with a black pencil such as Dior Waterproof Crayon Eyeliner in Trinidad, then extending it towards the end of the brows, therefore using the bottom eye line as a guide. As with all smoky eye recreations the key is maximum impact on the eyes and so not to look overdone never play up lips and brows with too much depth or colour.

I'm endlessly excited about serums and in the past year I have tried plenty on myself with some great results. Now, I have discovered two super serums which work really well in my kit by the Britsh 'Green Cosmeceuticals', Medik 8, which create instant results when worn under make-up.

Hydra B5 is a non-greasy, lightweight formula full of moisture-enhancing ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid and without getting into too much beauty jargon, when I used this on clean skin, under foundation, a radiant complexion peeped through very nicely indeed. Skincare Classics!

Back in the late 70's, I would watch my mum slather on, wipe off and dab on various bits of cosmetics from her dressing table. There was always a bottle of something fascinating to poke my fingers into or perfume to sniff and sneeze at but I was glued to these rituals and the results.
Roll on some years later, me, a Make-Up Artist with a boundless fascination and impulse to try as many products as I can no matter what the advertisers say.
I was handed over some Pond's Creams some time ago and with an endless backlog of products to test, I have only found the time to try these skincare classics recently.
Was I hesitant about trying skincare without a hefty price tag?
No, because these timeless cosmetics stay around for a reason, plus my mum has superb skin and sometimes, do I really want to overdose on science?
Pond's Cold Cream Cleansing Cream is as I remembered it, smooth, cool with it's unique texture to fully remove residue, make-up whilst leaving skin soft and yes, pretty much like a babies bottom. I like using this Cold Cream, it does what it says it's going to do and that is all you want really.

In addition to the Cold Cream, I thought I'd compliment my routine with Pond's Hydronourishing Cream, again, a texture I would only respresent with Pond's and their super rich creams. Nourishing? Certainly. Long lasting hydration? Indeed, no need to reapply. Leaves skin feeling and looking radiant? Yes, and I love creams that leave a slight sheen to makes skin appear more youthful.
Most happy to carry on using these classics, after all, I can't beat the ageing process but can work with Pond's as it's older and wiser than me!

Trend Alert! Fast forward 70's make-up.

Make Up Artists', me included, can make new trends look simple and effortless in a few steps. The truth is, it can be that easy and with an injection of confidence and gusto, you really can achieve catwalk trends without the pressure of beauty rules. Anything goes and make-up should be fun! Above is a picture of a model I worked with on Monday for Hairdresser and super teaser, Maximiliano Centini, Fulham. The heavy-duty blue sockets in Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow in Imagine, sets off the look so be wise in choosing a highly pigmented eye shadow to do the job and essentially most of the work.

For speed and to set the tone for the look I firmly swept the eye shadow into the models sockets, far into inner and outer sockets whilst her eyes were open to make sure the eye shadow sits in the correct place to create a 'hollowed' effect. The eye shadow was them pressed along the lower lash line and extended up and further out towards the tail end of the brows. You might find it helps to use a coloured eye liner pencil such as Bourjois Metallic Eye Liner Pencils to draw the shape, then apply eye shadow over the top, then glide a metallic pencil along the water line for sultry depth. Alternatively, you can ditch brushes and apply with fingers, this can assist blending! For a complimentary flash of colour and to emphasise the eye shape and brows, I highlighted the eye lids with another matte colour, Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow in Creep, then worked a touch of Lick Powder Eye Shadow under brows, avoiding the brow bone which was later finished off with Illamasqua Pure Pigment in Furore.

Believe it or not, it does become straight forward....curl lashes, add a sturdy black mascara such as Dior Show Waterproof Mascara on upper and lower lashes, then I used Blink & Go Temptress lashes for added volume and wider eyes. Skin? Yes, a light veil of Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturiser No. 2 and 3, a generous sweep of Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer No. 11 over cheekbones, above the brow, forehead and bridge of the nose to hightlight and delicately sculpt contours of the face. The finishes touch to lips had to remain neutral and almost bare, so I chose the coral tinge of Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Emerge ,which I later used to block out brows by combing through eye brows for more drama and impact.
By now, you might be aghast at the list of products but I assure you, you're likely to have a stash of colourful palettes and unused products lurking so I hope this spurns you on to experiement, play and enjoy make-up like us Make Up Artist's get to do every day!

Illamasqua and beyond!

I have already posted these pictures on Twitter today but here is a closer look at the 'unexpected' launch from Illamasqua named Toxic Nature. I say unexpected, because often we are transfixed on devilishly dark, vampish looks from Alex Box, however, the earthy tones along with brights, all inspired by last years ash cloud episode, taken on a curious twist. The squares pictures in the foreground are brand new, Cream Pigments; blendable, matte and can be used everywhere including hair!

I am totally in love with this shade for lips and what I would call Vermillion being from an art background, Illamasqua call it Flare. It's a bold, powdery orange/red and the perfect for this Summer.

Now back to the Cream Pigments! The infamous Spob was on hand today taking us Make Up Artists' through the new collections endless uses. These pots of cream pigment have depth like I've never seen and unlike greasepaint, leave a non-greasy finish which can be mixed into a paste for blocking, built up from a wash to solid colour or even used as a liner and seen here using Hollow, along the water line for a lasting eyeline. I've been informed of more colour and innovative textures from Illamasqua, your credit card has been warned!

Long Lash Alert!

Here we are at week 5 of trialling M2 Beaute. I should have taken 'before' pictures but really, who wants to see sparse lashes and brows. My eye brows have filled in nicely. I'm not keen to have them too much thicker but where they have thickened, I like. The most noticeable change is the length of my lashes, as they never before tailed off to such a great length.

Here's a closer look where you can see a glossy coating over the lashes as well as a third more lashes than I had before. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago a few of my lower lashes fell out which is due to Hypothyroidism, therefore a slower blood supply but luckily for me, whilst using M2 Lash Activating Serum, they began to grow back within a week.
I will continue using M2 Beaute to see the maximum I can achieve. Ideally, I would like to improve thickness and already I can see that I'm requiring less mascara than usual, which is a big bonus!

Nail Play!

Nothing like adding more brights and neons to your nails as we move into next season. I was lucky enough to have had my nails painted this week at the Dior event with the new Limited Edition Dior Vernis in Aloha, a bright tangerine. Today, I've added Orly Nail Lacquer to the tips for a fun acid colour effect. The violet shade in Frolic, along with mint blue, Frisky and fruity pink, Hawiian Punch which can all be topped off with Orly Polishield, 3-in-1 Topcoat.
Keep a look out for these in the next few months!

Bronzing Bonanza!

This summer sees an array of bronzing palettes to assist contouring and a sunkissed complexion. Quite frankly, I cannot wait to use these on shoots. I've picked 3 of my favourites seen so far...

Dior are tempting us with this quilted compact in two shades both of which are quite matte with a warm apricot hue, ideal for pepping up mid to olive toned skin.

Chanel's stack of bronze and rich rose shades makes for a useful palette as you can apply all shades or choose from each section to sculpt and highlight.

Last but not least, Clarins mosaic masterpiece in a rather large compact, ideal for lightly dusting over collarbones and decollate.

Spring = Colour!

I am desperately pining for the warmer weather to kick in; to reveal my coral pink toes, flushed cheeks and my 'sort of' all year round tan!
So in today's blog, instead of whetting your appetites with the lastest beauty launches, innovative tools and cutting edge beauty finds from my make-up kit, all I want to say is 'Get some colour on'.
Play, experiment or try something totally new. Dust off that eyeshadow you've left at the back of the drawer, delve deeper into you make-up bag for those long lost liquid liners you had longed for, once upon a time.
I have already been sporting the powdered, bold bright lips as seen in DVF S/S shows and it is perking up my sallow, sun seeking skin, revealing a fresher, new look for 2011. Part Two: The Great Lash Appeal.

It has been about 3 weeks since applying M2 Beaute Lash Activating Serum, Revitalising Gloss and M2 Brows day and night religiously. I've not been expecting a quick-fix, though I am most happy to reveal my lashes have taken to this beauty system rather well.
My lashes have gained length and I must admit, I never thought the lengthening effect would make a remarkable difference, now these additional millimetres to the tips now extend further than I ever thought they could. Whilst my lash line, top and bottom are filling up, this I love, as I lost some of my lashes sometime ago.
The condition of my eyelashes appear glossier and eyebrows are slowly thickening in the right places. I am not aiming for Brooke Shields but I sure would be in beauty bliss grooming and plucking my brows into shape!

I am constantly on the look out for treatments to breathe new life into my lashes and brows after an unfortunate bout of hairloss. And with any luck, I may have found something to activate growth without too much fuss and nonsense. Hygiene is high on my list of priorities as a Make Up Artist and it should be for any beauty user.
Many individuals, sitting in my make up chair have admitted never cleaning their 10 year old blusher brush, whilst in the same conversation declaring their skin unpredictable with incurable spots. Er, hello!!!
I beg to differ, a little common sense and thought is all that is required. Cleaning brushes regularly with shampoo, brush cleaner or good old fashioned Fairy Liquid to avoid bacteria growth, which leads to those unsightly pimples is a 'no brainer'. Throwing away products when their consistency or smell changes and most definitely your mascara, every 3 months maximum without fail is not senseless but sensible.
At work, if I didn't follow the hygiene code of conduct, I would be passing on bad practice and bacteria time after time. Make Up Artists have to set standards and quite frankly it makes for a better artist!
I use spatulas, artists palettes to dispense products, hand sanitizers, disposable mascara and lipgloss wands etc. Unfortunately, it wasn't something I was taught at college many years ago, but since following simple steps and procedures along the way, it has become second nature, just as making up a face has.
All quite simple really, you wouldn't eat off a dirty plate now, would you?!
